We used to pay for protection from McAfee but why pay when you can have a fully-working solution for free? So we now use Avast!. It does all we need it to do.
If your PC is not running as fast as it used to, it may need a tuneup. There are lots of tools on the market, but the one we use is Advanced System Care. We’ve found it to give a real improvement in performance - and it’s free!

SourceForge.net states that it is “the world’s largest Open Source software development web site, hosting more than 180,000 projects and more than 1.9 million registered users with a centralized resource for managing projects, issues, communications, and code” (as at January 2009). Put simply, if you’re looking for free open-source software this is probably the best place to start.

In their own words:
“OpenOffice is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. It can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for any purpose.”
Our experience is that OpenOffice really works, and the user interface is very similar to you-know-who’s product, but those little differences can be irritating at first. It’s probably best to standardise on one or the other, rather than switching backwards and forwards and ending up totally confused.
We have no idea who David Pye is, but he certainly likes giving things away, and we use some of his stuff in the sites we build.
The box on the right is one of his freebies (very slightly amended by us because the original altered the anchor behaviour and we didn’t want that):

Not strictly a free download but useful anyway, the MergePDF online utility (guess!) merges two or more PDF files together to produce a composite result. So if (like us) you refuse to pay the exhorbitant cost of the ‘leading’ PDF writer and, instead use something free that can write PDF files but not edit them, you can now combine your creations into a single PDF document. It seems to work but if you have large files and limited bandwidth be aware that you have to both upload the files and download the result.
Also not a free download but useful if, like us, you manage websites for yourself or customers: a collection of free-to-use online tools for checking things about your site, including how fast it is.
PS: ‘SEO’ stands for ‘Search Engine Optimisation’. If you’re new to websites, a lot of people will try to sell you information and services to ‘help’ you improve the positioning of your site on search engines such as Google™. In our view most of these are a waste of time and money. To get a good ranking what you need is a well constructed site with interesting content that lots of other sites choose to link into. There’s some genuinely useful (and free) advice on this from the people who ought to know: Google™ themselves.
If you really truly give away software and we think it’s useful we’ll link to your site from here; please contact us.
